It is to literally help you spit it out (expectorate=spit). The cilia lining your windpipe should move it upward for disposal.<br><br>It suppresses coughing by reducing tickling.<br><br>Scotch is probably more fun, although when I had my lurgy a few weeks back I went right off the stuff!
