Doing The Math

Since I've done the math for Johanna, who's cooking/ baking in grams these days, I'll put it down in succinct chart form, for future reference:

2 cups = 500 ml = 16 oz = 1 pound = 454 g

1 cup = 250 ml = 8 oz = 1/2 pound = 227 g

1/2 cup = 125 ml = 4 oz = 1/4 pound = 113.5 g

1/3 cup = 75 ml = 3 oz = 85 g

1/4 cup = 60 ml = 2 oz = 57 g

Generally speaking.

*AMENDMENT:  You'd best use Jen's suggested website, here, and do your own math for the best results! It looks like a most excellent tool. Thanks Jen!

  2. You need to be careful there, since different substances have different densities. I.e, while 1 lb of butter may measure 2 cups, 1 lb of flour, or brown sugar, or whatever, will not. This site is pretty useful: http://www.hertzmann.com/articles/2000/weight/conversion.php

click on "Weight to Volume Approximations" and you'll get lots of choices.

  3. I was just going to say....

1 cup of flour doesn't weigh the same as 1 cup of milk.
