Grandma, What Big Eyes You Have!

I blame the Optometrist.

Ever since I got the "You're getting to an age now..." lecture things just haven't been the same.

They've been going steadily downhill, in fact.

I forget things.

My knees ache.

My fingers get stiff.

I spend more time sewing and knitting with my glasses perched on the top of my head than on my nose where they belong.

And tomorrow?

Tomorrow I will be Carolyn's Guest-Grandparent!

This, at least, will be a pleasant diversion, but it does remind me of those numbers insinuating themselves after that big "4" in my age.

So, tomorrow morning, bright and early, I'll go to the school to help get things ready for the Valentine Grandparent's Tea. In the afternoon I'll go and listen to the children sing, then have a cup of tea with little Carolyn. I'm looking forward to it. I feel quite honoured that she thought of me when the chips were down, and I'm so glad that I can be there with her.

I remember our first Grandparent's Tea. Thomas was in grade 2 then, and we had just barely moved here from Winnipeg. We were Grandparent-less. Nobody likes to be the only kid sitting alone- or with the teacher. We borrowed Auntie Florence and tears were quelled and hearts were happy.

Carolyn's Grandparents live in Ontario, so it's a bit of a commute just for a cup of tea and a cookie. I'm glad I can step up and be her guest.

I'm glad that Carolyn and her little sister Katie live down the block.

I'm glad that we are friends.

I'm glad Carolyn will have someone who loves her to sit with at the Tea tomorrow afternoon.

This is what being an available stay-at-home parent is all about.

  1. Well if you are going to borrow any "grandparent" figure she is the best one to have. I bet she was tickled to attend. And good for you for being able to be "family" to someone else there. I know we would have had a hard time surviving if we didn;t have Granpa Joe and Grandma Viv in Farmington and Grandma Linda and Papa Garth here in YK.
