For The Record...

With the last Harry Potter book coming out tomorrow, and the author's report of 2 deaths in this one, and amid much speculation, I must put in my two-bit's worth.

So, for what it's worth, I think that she's going to do Professor Snape in, (although, the way the 6th book ended, I don't suppose we can respectfully call him "Professor" anymore!). I also think our old friend/ nemesis Peter Pettigrew, a.k.a. Wormtail will bite it.

I further propose that if either of these two characters snuff it, they will do so in the process of doing mortal damage to the great masked marauder himself, Lord Voldemort.

My thinking is that each of the books, so far, has had a very redemptive theme. There is usually an element of "giving one's life for another" when there's been the death of a main/ good character. I kind of don't think that the essential good of Harry Potter's character will actually be sullied by having him kill anyone. What did one of the bad guys say in the last book... "You have to really want to hurt someone to be able to do that curse..." or something like that. I'm hoping that Harry doesn't have what it takes to kill anyone- even the Dark Lord.

SO, someone else will have to do it for him, and whoever does it will probably die in the doing.

I would be really surprised if Snape doesn't die in an attempt to kill Voldemort; it would completely redeem him for being the one who told Voldemort of the prophesy that led to the attack on Harry and the death of his parents... and it would prove, once and for all, that he was a reformed Death Eater. It would also take away all the reasons Harry hates him, and there would be forgiveness (another recurring theme in the books) as well as redemption. Wormtail has my vote because he was similarly involved in Harry's Parents' death, and he owes his life to Harry- who had a chance to kill him in book 3 but chose not to.

So, there you have it.

I think that if any of the main Hogwarts characters (Harry and his friends) are taken out it will probably be Ginny. But I kind of don't think they will be.

Now... we just have to wait for our number (6) to come up at the library... or for Hillary, being unable to wait that long, to buy the book!

  1. Interesting thoughts! Marc and I are anxiously waiting to read it when it arrives in the mail (hopefully Monday or Tuesday). The plan is for him to read it in the evenings and me read it in teh day; we'll probably be done by the end of the week. If you want, you can borrow it after that. We're going to take it over to Venturoso after that b/c I insist on buying the softcover when it comes out, to match the other ones. Let me know (or I'll let you know when we're done reading it).

  2. Interested!

Let me know when you've finished, and if Hillary hasn't purchased one, and our number hasn't come up early... we'll borrow!

  3. I don't know if Snape could be redeemed after killing Dumbledore. I think that Harry will kill Voldemort, and I wonder if one of the main three characters will die. Or maybe Ginny like you suggested. I recall hearing JK Rowling say that she was quite upset writing this seventh book as some characters that she really loves die (or something to that effect). I don't know if she would cry over Snape and Pettigrew. But I really have no idea who dies....and well, I am going to buy the book at Extra Foods tomorrow and hopefully will be done reading it by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
